Daily Writing #16: The false promise of side hustle

It’s everywhere these days, the word “side-hustle”.

If you open medium you will notice that majority of the articles on it relate to side hustles in one or the other way.

All the so-called influencers are raging about side hustle income nowadays. Just pick a niche, do 4-5 steps and see the moolah roll in.

What a bunch of crap.

They lure you in with false promises. The biggest one is that it will be easy money.

Do you really think in today’s hyper-competitive world it would be too easy to make money with your side hustle? No.

Do you think you are the only person in the world thinking about entering that particular side hustle niche? No.

Do you think you can bypass all the natural laws of success? No.

Then why do you think it would be easy to rake in money while you sip margaritas on a beach.

And the irony is influencers say to start more than one side hustle.

Yeah, sure. Just try doing that once. I hope you survive to tell the tale after even a week.

Its humanely impossible to focus on more than one.

The bitter truth

The harsh truth is establishing a side hustle so that it generates enough income that you can live off takes time. It will take you the same amount of focus that you require in your main job because the competition is high. In addition to the competition, you need time to study the niche that you choose to go ahead of other people. If you just give 2-3 hours daily a day to your side hustle then people who give more than that will overtake you easily. I agree 2-3 hours can work but only if you spend it daily for a year or more. Working 5 hours on weekend won’t cut it. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Moreover, it is not easy to work on your side hustle after sloggin all day at your job.

It takes insane focus, dedication, and consistency to work during your free time when you think you deserve to rest.

Let us cut the crap and tell people what it really takes. It is not easy.

So, is it all bad news? No.

Obviously, if you are determined to work hard, won’t give up easily, are prepared to work consistently, and are willing to learn continuously you can establish your side hustle. But do remember that it will not be passive. You would have to be actively engaged in that to make it into something.

Nothing comes easy in life, so why should building a side hustle be easy?

I write daily here on my blog. There is no limit to the word count. I am not focusing on any topic here. I want to build a daily writing habit. This is Day 16 of the Daily Writing Challenge in 2022.
