People sometimes inflate the good and hide the bad side of a thing. They stress the beauty without looking at the ugliness simmering underneath the surface.
In life, good can’t exist without bad.
No one thing is perfect. Without looking analyzing both the good and the bad you will not be able to realize whether that thing is good for you or not.
Below is my list of top 3 things that I consider to be vastly overrated in today’s world:
Traveling
This is often glorified too much to the extent that the dark side of this never comes to light. Amidst the pictures of people on sun-bathed beaches, or the Amazon-like rainforests, why does no one talk about the exhaustion?
You will be really tried while traveling and that matters, a lot. It’s not a good feeling to be tired or exhausted.
Your travel diaries would be filled with amazing stories but be prepared to fight your body for it. You have to become self-aware about how much stress your body can handle. Because trust me, traveling is stressful mentally and physically.
The coziness of your bed at night is not affordable to you while traveling to some remote location in a different part of the world.
And don’t get me started on the cheap staying options like hostels. These places are filled with people that you know nothing about and they often don’t care about your sleep. I once slept in a hostel with a bunk bed system where people had no empathy for others. They kept talking on their phones even after the lights were switched off.
It was irritating. To make matters worse, some people snored as well.
See, you might think these are just small issues that you can ignore. But no, you will not be able to do so. These small issues soon pile up increasing your stress level rapidly.
You need to consider all these points before you pack your bags and travel to another country or even within your country.
Drinking
Alcoholic beverages are glorified in the media everywhere. In the movies, or TV shows you can see our hero or villain holding a glass of his favorite alcoholic beverage in one hand and a cigarette in another.
It’s shown like some symbol of power.
In real life, it is definitely not.
Drinking something that makes you lose control over yourself doesn’t make you powerful. It makes you weak.
On top of it, these drinks affect our health too. Don’t give me that theory that we need to try everything once. No, we don’t need to do that. We need not try everything on this planet, especially if we are prone to addictions. But I haven’t seen anyone who has stopped after 1 glass only.
So better stay away from it altogether.
There are a lot of things to try in our life that wouldn’t have grave consequences for our health.
Opposing tradition for the sake of it
People these days oppose anything that is old or traditional. They go against cultural practices that are being practiced for generations.
I believe change is necessary. But not everything needs a modern approach. Our old traditions and customs were there due to some reason. Opposing them without a proper understanding of their foundational principles is just foolish. More so when you don’t have a suitable alternative.
Go deep into your past traditions and see why were they established. If the reasons are valid then stop opposing. If you find solid evidence against them then create your own traditions.
What are the things you consider to be overrated? Let me know in the comments.
I write daily here on my blog. There is no limit to the word count. I am not focusing on any topic here. I want to build a daily writing habit. This is Day 39 of the Daily Writing Challenge in 2022.
